Thirty bold and colorful paintings of contemporary Aboriginal Australian artwork are being exhibited for the first time in North America at Gallery Nine,
the exhibition runs through June 28, 2012.
This is a rare opportunity for an internalional audience to learn more about
the treasured indigenous culture of remote Australia.
"Ancient Land, New Territory"
Gallery Nine 5, at 24 Spring street, New York City.
To the Western eye, the works are similar in aesthetic to Abstract Expressionism.
Although the artists use contemporary materials like canvas and acrylics
in their creations, the abstractions rely on stories passed down through
generations and draw inspiration from the vibrant colors of the Australian
landscape. The paintings display the beliefs and practices of the Dreaming
or Tjukurrpa, the ancestral story of the land from which Indigenous people
draw their physical and spiritual strength.
NY artists, Noel, Celine and Bibi, enjoyed the exhibition.
Two of the Aboriginal artists, Yang Yang Fox and Monica Watson.
